Louis is an accomplished patent litigator with a proven track record of success representing both patent owners and accused infringers in high stakes disputes before U.S. District courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). With more than two decades of experience, Louis has become one of the most experienced ITC litigators nationwide—particularly among those based outside Washington, D.C. He has also participated in close to 50 inter partes review proceedings before the PTAB and several dozen district court patent cases. He holds a B.S. in electrical engineering, providing him with a strong technical foundation that sets him apart in complex technology
Louis’s unique combination of deep technical knowledge and exceptional communication skills, which consistently position his clients for favorable outcomes. His ability to distill and explain the intricate technical concepts to judges, juries, and non-technical audiences has been instrumental in securing victories. In one notable ITC trial, Louis’s meticulous cross examination of a hostile technical witness—navigating complicated source code evidence—elicited a critical admission that undermined the opposing expert’s testimony and preserved his client’s patent against a prior sale invalidity challenge. This result exemplifies Louis’s skill in translating technical complexity into compelling legal arguments.
Louis believes that the foundation of every successful patent representation starts with a deep understanding of the factual background and can often be found combing the stacks at engineering libraries to find key prior art and evidence. Even so, Louis strives to solve his clients’ problems as quickly and effectively as possible. Indeed, other lawyers have described Louis as “the most efficient lawyer I’ve ever worked with.”
Louis’s district court litigation experience spans all major patent venues, including the Eastern District of Texas, Northern District of California, and the District of Delaware. He often continues his representations through appeal to the Federal Circuit. He is adept at managing every phase of litigation, from pre-filing investigations to discovery, Markman hearings, summary judgment, trial and appeal.
Louis’s practice covers a broad spectrum of technologies, such as cable modems, MoCA networking, wireless communication technologies and standards (such as OFDMA, OFDM, 5G, 4G (LTE), 3G (WCDMA), 2G (CDMA and TDMA), and 802.11), mobile phone apps, check processing, interactive program guides, smartphones, video games, graphics, texture compression (such as S3TC and PVRTC), processor instruction sets (x86 and ARM), CPU and GPU architecture, wafer fabrication, cryptography, industrial control systems, supply chain management, and automotive technologies.
Clients turn to Louis for his strategic insight, technical fluency, and unwavering commitment to achieving their business objectives in even the most challenging patent disputes. Please get in touch with him if you need advice or counsel regarding any patent litigation matters.
